CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — Creighton’s late rally fell one run short Saturday as Austin Peay took a 9-8 win over the Bluejays in the Riverview Inn Classic.
CU (5-3) came within one run when Jordan Makovicka drew a one-out, bases-loaded walk in the top of the ninth inning. The rally halted there as Michael Blatchford struck out and Brad McKewon grounded out.
The Jays found themselves down by two runs because of what transpired in the bottom of the eighth inning. CU’s third error of the game resulted in two runs and a 9-7 edge.
Creighton senior Alex Staehely and junior Mike Gerber did provide the first Bluejay home runs of the season. Seven games and two innings into the 2013 campaign, Staehely hit the team’s first home run over the left-field wall. Gerber led off the third with CU’s second long ball.
Creighton wraps up play in the Classic Sunday at 11 a.m. against Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
