Voters in the Omaha Public Schools district will have a chance to meet the school board candidates at a series of forums beginning March 21.
The World-Herald and the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring the forums, one in each of the nine OPS subdistricts.
All 39 candidates have been invited.
“With so little time before voters head to the polls, this event will offer an excellent opportunity for candidates to share their qualifications for office and priorities for the district directly with voters,” said World-Herald Executive Editor Mike Reilly.
The Legislature passed a bill last month shrinking the board from 12 members to nine and mandating new elections.
The field of candidates wasn't set until the March 1 filing deadline. The primary is April 2.
A World-Herald journalist will ask questions and moderate among the candidates. Members of the public also will be given a chance to ask questions.
The primary is the most competitive since 1978. Every subdistrict has at least three candidates; only two in each subdistrict will advance to the May 14 general election.
