NU renames facility to honor Gordon; Devaney court named for Pettit

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents voted 7-0 Friday to rename the baseball practice facility “The Alex Gordon Training Complex” and the new volleyball court at revamped Bob Devaney Sports Center “Terry Pettit Court.”

Now a left-fielder for the Kansas City Royals, Gordon was an All-Nebraska player at Lincoln Southeast and former All-American third baseman at NU. He and wife Jamie Gordon recently made a $1 million donation to the facility, which provides an indoor training area for the baseball and softball teams.

“I really like the indoor facility,” Gordon said in a statement. “It helps in the off-season and helps in recruiting, so I thought it was a great idea for both parties.”

Said baseball coach Darin Erstad in the same press release: “It's great that Alex is able to give back to this program. You can see how much Nebraska means to him. We always appreciate it when former student-athletes are able to give back to the program and the whole Nebraska baseball family appreciates what Alex is doing.”

A two-time AVCA National Coach of the Year, Pettit won a national title and 21 conference titles as the Huskers' coach for 23 years. The naming of the court, according to a NU press release, is related to a gift given by boosters Bill and Ruth Scott in Pettit's honor.

“The volleyball program has a rich history of success and is a leading national power among women's athletics, due in large part to the foundation laid by Coach Pettit,” Bill and Ruth Scott said in a statement.

Said current Husker volleyball coach John Cook, who was handpicked by Pettit to succeed him: “As we prepare to move into the Devaney Center for the 2013 season, our theme is to 'Honor the past and invent the future' Nebraska volleyball has always been a program that embraced its history and tradition, while also establishing the bar for what college volleyball could be. While the Devaney Center represents the future, it is only fitting that we celebrate the past by naming the court in honor of Coach Pettit."

Husker turnovers: A slippery slope
Bo Pelini has coached 68 games at Nebraska. When NUís turnover margin is positive or even, the Huskers are 35-2. When they lose the turnover battle, theyíre 13-18. Why hasnít Nebraska joined the nationís elite? More than anything, itís turnovers.
