In a scoreless game entering the seventh, the Hawkeyes scored three runs on four hits to take a lead that Matt Dermody (4-0) and reliever Taylor Kaufman made stand en route to a 4-1 win in the second game of a three-game series at Eck Stadium.
The Mavericks (3-8) made it 3-1 in the top of the eighth as Clayton Taylor scored fellow freshman Alex Schultz on a groundout. But Iowa (8-7) added an insurance run in its half of the inning for the final margin.
Dermody scattered five hits in 713 innings, allowing one earned run while striking out eight with a walk. Keith Brand finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs for the Hawkeyes.
Tyler Splichal went 3 for 4 and Connor Messinger added two hits for UNO.
