WICHITA, Kan. — UNO scored all of its runs in the fifth inning to defeat Iowa 7-6 Monday.
Cole Gruber’s two-run double capped the decisive frame for the Mavericks, who scored six runs with two outs.
A freshman from Papillion-La Vista, Gruber went 2 for 4 with a run scored. Sophomore Alex Mortensen and junior Brent Bass also added two hits apiece for UNO (4-8), which took two of three from the Hawkeyes.
Reliever Dylan Casey (1-0), a junior from Omaha Bryan, allowed one hit in two innings to earn the win. Elkhorn junior Josh Bullock pitched 113 innings to earn his second save of the season.
Nick Hibbing (0-1) took the loss, giving up seven runs on three hits and three walks. Kris Goodman had three hits and scored twice to lead Iowa (8-8).
The Mavs play next at Air Force at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
