While Fort Calhoun didn’t quite reach the state tournament this season, Maddie Westergard tried hard to make that happen.
The 6-foot-2 senior forward averaged 18.2 points and 12.8 rebounds for the Class C-1 Pioneers, who finished 19-4. Westergard is the honorary captain of The World-Herald’s All-Omaha Area girls basketball team.
“Maddie meant so much to our team this season,” Fort Calhoun coach Mark Bouwman said. “Everything we ran offensively went through her.”
Westergard is the only returning first-team selection. Other first-teamers are Mary Janovich of Gretna, Kenzie Kulm of Platteview, Becky Mueller of Omaha Concordia and Joelle Overkamp of Omaha Gross.
Second-team selections are Sami Hansen of Bennington, Leanna Willer of Elkhorn, Jamie Schuetz of Gretna, Kate Schulte of Omaha Duchesne and Jenn Wies of Elkhorn South.
The all-area teams are for players outside the Metro Conference. Nominations of coaches and observations of World-Herald sportswriters determine the teams.
Westergard finished her career with 1,040 points, third all-time at Fort Calhoun. She also is the school’s career leader in rebounds and blocks.
“She led us in several categories even though she was double and triple-teamed every game,” Bouwman said. “She was a big reason why we were able to boost our number of wins to 19 this season.”
Janovich, a 5-7 junior guard, averaged 15 points for the 22-4 Dragons. She also averaged five rebounds and four steals for Gretna, which reached the state tournament for the 12th time.
Kulm, a second-team selection as a freshman last year, averaged 15.5 points and 9.5 rebounds for the 17-7 Trojans. Her two-year totals at Platteview are 659 points, 474 rebounds, 200 steals and 172 assists.
Mueller, a 5-10 senior, also was a second-team selection last season. She averaged 16.7 points and sank 35 3-pointers for the 15-8 Mustangs, who came within one win of reaching state.
Overkamp was a big reason why the Cougars had one of their best seasons in many years. The 5-11 junior led 18-7 Gross in almost every offensive category while averaging 13.7 points per game.
