Allie Mathewson’s RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Lindsay Redding from second base to give UNO a 1-0 win over South Dakota State on Saturday at Westside Field.
The win completed the Mavericks’ Summit League-opening sweep of the Jackrabbits.
UNO’s Dana Elsasser (15-4) and SDSU’s Kori Seidlitz engaged in a pitchers’ duel throughout the contest, and each team had just one hit through five innings.
The Mavericks threatened in the seventh inning when Molly Negrete singled, advanced on a sacrifice and reached third on an error. But Seidlitz forced two groundouts to get out of the inning.
In the 10th, Redding led off with a walk, and the senior from Papillion-La Vista stole second on the first pitch to Mathewson.
Mathewson, a sophomore from Papillion-La Vista South, then lined a single up the middle to score Redding.
Elsasser allowed just two hits and picked up her eighth shutout of the season. A junior from Hershey, she struck out a career-high 11 batters and walked none in her longest outing as a Maverick.
Seidlitz (5-12) took the loss, despite allowing just one run on four hits. She had seven strikeouts and four walks.
Negrete, a senior from Millard South, singled twice to finish as the only player with more than one hit.
UNO (25-4, 3-0) will next host North Dakota on Monday. The nonconference doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
