URBANA, Ill. — Senior Brooke Thomason’s first- inning, two-run double provided No. 19 Nebraska with all the runs it would need as the Huskers defeated Illinois 7-1 Sunday.
Junior right-hander Tatum Edwards (16-5) pitched a two-hitter. After Illinois scored in the bottom of the first, Edwards surrendered one hit and allowed three base runners in the final six innings. She struck out six in winning her eighth straight start.
Husker freshman Kiki Stokes and senior Gabby Banda drew walks to begin the game and advanced on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Thomason delivered a double to the gap in left-center. She later scored on an error to put Nebraska ahead 3-0.
The Huskers (25-7, 4-1 Big Ten) stretched their lead to 5-1 with two runs in the fifth when Hailey Decker’s RBI single scored Thomasen and sophomore Mattie Fowler scored on a wild pitch.
In the sixth, Fowler’s two-out, RBI single scored Banda, and Taylor Edwards scored on Decker’s bases-loaded walk.
With the win, Nebraska won just its second road series in two seasons of Big Ten play. NU and Illinois split a doubleheader Saturday.
Thomason finished with two RBIs and two runs scored while Decker, celebrating her 19th birthday, also drove in two runs. Banda scored twice and drew three walks. In all, the Huskers drew 13 walks but stranded 14 runners, tying a season high.
Nebraska continues its seven-game road trip Wednesday at Creighton. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at CU Sports Complex.
