Huskers seeking bullpen depth

LINCOLN — Nebraska coach Darin Erstad might be a little more selective about which pitchers he uses during the rest of the Huskers’ midweek games this year.

For a team lacking depth in its bullpen, more unproven pitchers might get a chance in games like Tuesday’s 6:30 p.m. matchup at Kansas State (18-10, 3-3 Big 12).

“We kind of have to shift gears a hair to development mode during midweek,” Erstad said.

The Huskers (11-15, 5-1 Big Ten) are looking for mid-inning relievers, guys who can step in when the starters start to wear down and maintain order before sophomore Josh Roeder (0.69 ERA in nine appearances) and senior Dylan Vogt (four saves) take over out of the bullpen.

Starting against the Wildcats on Tuesday is junior left-hander Tyler King (1-0, 11.37), who could be emerging as a possible weekend reliever after two straight encouraging appearances.

NU junior Zach Hirsch has a 1.00 ERA and two wins in his past four appearances. Sophomore Aaron Bummer has nine strikeouts in 823 innings.

But Erstad isn’t satisfied.

“We’re going to need a little bit more depth than that,” Erstad said. “We still have a lot of issues to deal with. We’ll continue to work through that.”

Kansas State will start right-hander Blake McFadden (1-1).
