LAWRENCE, Kan. — Mike Gerber hit his third home run of the season to ignite a five-run second inning as Creighton downed Kansas 6-4 Tuesday.
The Bluejays (15-6) trailed 1-0 entering the second before Gerber erased the deficit with his team-leading third homer. The junior's blast was the first home run at Kansas' Hoglund Ballpark this season.
Alex Staehely followed with a single to left. One out later, Jayhawk starter Tanner Poppe walked Landon Lucansky, Ryan Fitzgerald and Kevin Lamb to give the Bluejays a 2-1 lead.
Creighton extended its lead as Lucansky scored on a fielder's choice from Brad McKewon. Brennan Murphy drove in Fitzgerald with another fielder's choice, and Jake Peter capped the inning with an RBI single for a 5-1 lead.
Kansas responded in the bottom of the third with a two-run double from Michael Suiter to make it 5-3. But the Bluejay bullpen clamped down, holding the Jayhawks to one more run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Creighton added another run in the top of the eighth when Reagan Fowler scored on Lamb's RBI single.
Seven Bluejay pitchers combined to scatter eight hits. Freshman Austin Groth earned his first win of the season, allowing one run on two hits in two innings. Peter picked up his fourth save of the season, allowing an unearned run in the ninth.
Gerber finished 2 for 5 while Lamb led CU with two RBIs.
The Bluejays return to Missouri Valley Conference play, opening a three-game series against Bradley at TD Ameritrade Park at 6 p.m. Friday.
