MANHATTAN, Kan. — The UNO baseball team loaded the bases in the ninth inning, but couldn’t bring home the tying run in a 3-2 loss Wednesday against Kansas State.
The Mavs (6-15) trailed 3-1 entering the ninth before cutting the deficit to one when Alex Schultz led off with a double and scored on an error following Cory Buckley’s single.
After a fielder’s choice for the second out, UNO loaded the bases with back-to-back singles by Brett Bass and Alex Mortensen. But Gerardo Esquivel got pinch hitter Connor McCrite to fly out to end the game.
Steven Schoonover (1-2) took the loss for the Mavs, allowing three runs — two earned — on seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks in six innings.
Jared Moore (1-0) got the win for the Wildcats with 42⁄3 innings of scoreless relief. UNO managed just two hits against Moore.
Mortensen had the Mavs’ only RBI, driving in Caleb Palensky with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.
UNO opens Summit League play Friday, hosting IPFW in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
