A musician with a New Orleans pedigree and a Grammy-winning band that played at the wedding reception for David Byrne of the Talking Heads are among the acts for this year’s Summer Arts Festival in downtown Omaha.
The 39th edition of the popular event will be June 7 through 9 on streets surrounding the Gene Leahy Mall. The festival will feature works from scores of artists, children’s activities, food and music.
Louis Prima Jr., son of legendary Big Easy jazz singer Louis Prima, will bring his group, the Witnesses featuring Sarah Spiegel, to play on Saturday. The group is known for its rocking swing music. And Brave Combo — a favorite of Byrne's — also will play its eclectic music that day, as will Rain Dogs.
Paa Kow’s By All Means Band will bring the sounds of Africa to the city on Friday. According to the band’s website, this African-inspired orchestra got its name from its band leader, Paa Kow, a native of Ghana. Davina and the Vagabonds and the Omaha Musicians Association Jazz All-Stars also will perform that day.
Son Venezuela, a 10-piece band based in Lawrence, Kan., will close out the festival Sunday with its Latin-inspired jazz music. Local jazz combo Luigi Inc. will continue its long run of performances in Omaha with a set at the festival.
