Connor Messinger hit two homers in the opener and Zach Williamsen pitched five shutout innings in the second game as UNO swept its first official Summit League games Friday, defeating Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne 6-3 and 2-0 at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
The Mavericks improved to 8-15 while the Mastodons dropped to 11-13 after the league opener for both teams.
Messinger, a redshirt freshman from Niwot, Colo., went 3 for 3 with five RBIs in the opener, hitting a three-run homer to set the tone in the first inning and then adding a two-run shot in the fifth after IPFW crept within 4-3.
Messinger’s homers were his first two of the year. UNO’s Tyler Splichal went 2 for 3 in each game.
Meanwhile, freshman Tyler Fox turned in another strong start in the opener, striking out a career-high six in five innings to improve to 3-1. Williamsen (1-1), a sophomore from Millard West, kept the Mastodons in check in the second game. He allowed three hits and a walk while, like Fox, matching a career-high with six strikeouts.
Sam Murphy and Derek Landis combined for four shutout innings out of the bullpen, with Landis working the final two innings for his first save.
Josh Bullock allowed two runs on three hits in the final two innings of the opener but picked up his fifth save.
UNO managed only four hits during the second game, but chased Chuck Weaver (2-2) after 413 innings. Weaver, who shut out the Mavericks last season, walked seven.
Jason Kalber (0-4) threw a complete game in the loss in the opener, giving up six runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
Splichal drove in a first-inning run before Messinger’s three-run homer in the opener.
IPFW struck back in the fifth, as Kevin Wirth sent a solo home run to left, cutting it to 4-1. In the sixth, the Mastodons scored two more runs on three hits to make it 4-3.
UNO scored both its second-game runs in the fourth inning, with the first coming on Cory Buckley’s RBI single. Buckley stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Brett Bass.
UNO hosts Oakland (7-18, 2-0) on Sunday in another 1 p.m. Summit doubleheader at Boys Town. The Mavs will start Matt Tew (0-4, 8.84 ERA) and Buckley (0-3, 4.72).
