Huskers top Iowa to notch sixth straight Big Ten win

IOWA CITY — Nebraska’s bats stayed hot and closer Dylan Vogt threw three shutout innings Saturday to lead the Huskers to their fifth straight Big Ten win, a 12-8 victory over Iowa.

A day after collecting 13 hits, Nebraska (13-16, 7-1 Big Ten) again pounded Iowa’s pitching. Chad Christensen had three hits and Blake Headley doubled twice as NU collected 17 hits.

Six Huskers drove in at least one run. Michael Pritchard, a junior from Omaha Creighton Prep, had a career-high four RBIs.

Still, the Huskers needed Vogt’s strong showing in a game in which the lead changed hands five times.

Iowa scored five runs in the third to take a 6-5 lead.

Eric Toole led off with an unconventional hit, blasting a liner off NU starter Ryan Hander’s leg into right field, and Trevor Kenyon later followed with a two-run double. Hander then walked Taylor Kaufman and hit a pair of Hawkeyes to force in a run, and Jake Mangler tied the game with a single to shallow center field. With the bases still loaded, Zach Hirsch relieved Hander and gave up a sacrifice fly to pinch-hitter Nick Roscetti.

Nebraska’s offense answered in the fourth. Pritchard delivered a two-out, two-run double, and Christensen’s sacrifice fly made it 8-6.

In the seventh, with the game tied 8-8, Headley’s double scored Tanner Lubach. Pritchard again delivered with two outs, this time with a bases-loaded, two-run single.

Iowa had the tying run at the plate in the seventh following a pair of one-out singles off Vogt, but the senior right-hander retired consecutive Hawkeyes to end the rally.

In the eighth, Nebraska got an insurance run when Headley ripped his second RBI double in two innings, pushing the Huskers’ lead to 12-8.

Nebraska picked up its third straight series win, and its fifth straight Big Ten series win dating back to last season.

The Huskers will go for their second straight sweep at 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
