Lincoln North Star sophomore Jeralyn Poe’s tuneup meet for her showdowns Thursday against Millard West senior Sidney Hirsch produced a pair of record runs Saturday at the Omaha Benson Invitational track meet.
Poe ran the 1,600 meters at Benson Stadium in 5:18.00 and the 3,200 in 11:30.20. She broke the meet records, each 15 years old, from former distance standouts Anne Shadle of South Sioux City and Paige Brown of Omaha North, respectively.
“The (1,600) was good because I had my season best in it, but the (3,200) wasn’t as fast as I wanted it to be,” Poe said.
She’ll see Hirsch, who took second in the 800 in her only event Friday night at the Millard South Invitational, at Thursday’s Dick Jones Invitational hosted by Omaha Central at Burke Stadium.
“She’s my biggest competition,” Poe said.
The Gators finished second Saturday to Fremont even though they won five events to three for the Tigers.
A 1-2-3 sweep of the pole vault helped Fremont to 97 points, seven more than North Star. The Tigers’ other winners were their 3,200 relay and Katie Sorensen in the high jump.
North Star’s boys turned back Omaha Northwest for a 138-123 win. The teams combined to capture 12 events, seven by the Gators.
Mohamed Hamdan of North Star took the state lead in the 800 at 1:56.35 and also won the 1,600 meters. He ended up with four golds as he ran on the winning 1,600 and 3,200 relays.
Eddie Key swept the throws for the Gators and Maurice Moore was the high jump champion.
Spencer Keely led Northwest by winning the 110 high hurdles and the long jump.
