Huskers' road rally clinches series win

IOWA CITY — Nebraska had just squandered a 2-0 lead an inning early and had two outs in the top of the seventh Sunday.

Then Husker third baseman Gabby Banda reached on an error and Taylor Edwards worked a walk off Kayla Massey, who had allowed just three hits all day. No. 19 Nebraska scored the winning run one batter later when Brooke Thomason hit a hard grounder that deflected off Hawkeye first baseman Brianna Luna's glove and into right field as the Huskers held on for a 3-2 win.

It was the seventh victory in the final at-bat this year for NU, which clinched the series win and improved to 28-8 overall, including 6-2 in the Big Ten. It was also the Huskers' 11th road win, the third-highest total in school history.

Banda's two-run single in the fifth gave NU its 2-0 lead, but Iowa answered in the sixth inning.

After a hit batter, Megan Blank — the Big Ten's RBI leader — delivered a two-run homer to right field on a 3-0 pitch to make it 2-2.

Nebraska took the lead in the top of the seventh, but Iowa put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the inning. After the lead runner was retired on a fielder's choice, reliever Emily Lockman got a lineout to end the game with Blank in the on-deck circle.

The Huskers return home on Wednesday for a doubleheader with Minnesota beginning at 4 p.m.
