A 13-year-old Lincoln girl who was injured Saturday in an ATV accident has died at a local hospital.
Emma Kringle, whose ponytail became entangled in the all-terrain vehicle's engine, was pronounced dead Monday at Bryan Medical Center in Lincoln, according to Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner.
The girl's family requested that her organs be donated to help others.
The county attorney has ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Wagner said an investigation determined that the girl's death was accidental. He said Emma had a “very long” ponytail and it became caught in the three-wheeled ATV's engine that is located right behind the driver.
“This was nothing more than a tragic accident,” Wagner said. “The girl was riding alone and her pony tail became entangled in the engine.”
Wagner said a 9-year-old cousin discovered Emma, who was unconscious, about 2:30 p.m. Saturday on her grandparents' property near Branched Oak Lake. Adults at the scene attempted CPR before paramedics arrived. A medical helicopter transported Emma to the hospital.
Wagner said Emma was wearing a helmet.
