Want to learn how to work fruits and veggies into your diet when you're on a limited food budget? Think you have to eat boneless, skinless chicken for the rest of your life to stay healthy?
“There are 29 lean cuts of red meat to choose from,” said Jennifer Meyer, a dietitian who works for Bag 'N Save and No Frills supermarkets. Both brands are owned by Minneapolis-based Nash Finch Co.
Meyer will be conducting free 'healthy buying' tours of three of the company's Omaha-area grocery stores this month.
Participants will learn how to shop for fruits and vegetables, whole grain foods and protein sources on a limited budget, and they'll collect a $10 Bag 'N Save/No Frills gift card and reusable shopping bag.
Participants also will learn how to read food labels and compare unit prices, learn to cook tasty, nutritious meals and serve healthful portions.
Hy-Vee stores in Omaha, Council Bluffs and Lincoln have also hosted similiar “nutritional” tours.
“Store tours provide a great hands-on opportunity to show our customers how to ... get the most nutritional bang for their buck,” Meyer said. “Following a healthy diet can often seem overwhelming, so my goal is to provide tour participants with simple and budget-friendly tips to make selecting and preparing nutritious foods easier. Hopefully, this will cut down on the confusion.”
And the good news? There's room for treats in moderation, Meyer said.
