Dario Schicke, who owns Dario's Brasserie in Dundee, is opening his second restaurant in the neighborhood.
Avoli Osteria will take over the space at 5013 Underwood Ave. Agave restaurant was its most recent tenant, and the space also was home to the 1020 and, before that, Trovato's.
Schicke said Avoli will be an Italian restaurant focused on hand-rolled pasta.
The name is a combination of the names of his two daughters, Ava and Olivia. He said he spent months trying to come up with a name for an Italian restaurant, but everything he thought of was already taken. “Osteria” translates from Italian as a place serving wine and simple food.
He said he has done much work on the inside of the restaurant, including turning one of the back dining rooms into a private party area, redoing restrooms and reconfiguring the bar in the front of the restaurant to be an open kitchen area where diners can watch cooks make fresh pasta.
He said the restaurant likely will serve pasta dishes for specials and he plans to import some Italian dry pasta. The restaurant will have an Italian wine list, and Schicke said he plans to bring some Italian craft beers to Omaha, expanding the list beyond standard Italian beers such as Peroni.
Pepper them with questions
The proprietors of Salt 88, which opens this spring in west Omaha, are inviting diners to ask them anything.
Co-owner John Horvatinovich will play host to a live question-and-answer session on Facebook today from noon to 1 p.m.
Horvatinovich is inviting people to submit their questions online at facebook.com/salt88. He'll answer the questions during the live chat, and one person who submits a question will win a $25 gift card to Hiro 88's west Omaha location.
Horvatinovich and Milton Yin, who also owns and runs Hiro 88, have partnered to open the restaurant, which will focus on the cuisine of Mediterranean countries such as Croatia and Italy. The restaurant is slated to open in May.
