Eight area artists have received 2013 Individual Artist Fellowships from the Nebraska Arts Council. This year they go to people in the visual arts field. Alternating years go to people in performing arts and film or literature.
Receiving $5,000 Distinguished Artist awards are Jess Benjamin, Omaha, ceramics; Elizabeth Ingraham, Lincoln, sculpture; and Yinghua Zhu, Omaha, installations.
Five $1,000 Merit Awards were given to Benjamin Darling, western Nebraska, paintings; Wanda Ewing, Omaha, multimedia; Christina Renfer Vogel, Omaha, portraits; Sheila Talbitzer, Omaha, photography; and Watie White, Omaha, paintings, prints and public art.
Horse art benefits equestrian foundation
The nonprofit Omaha Equestrian Foundation will benefit from an online auction of a painting by widely known horse artist Sharon Lynn Campbell.
The eBay auction, being held in association with the International Omaha horse jumping competition at the CenturyLink Center Omaha this weekend, is sponsored by Corporate Art Co.
Campbell’s “International 2013” depicts a horse and rider in a mid-air jump in front of a background depicting the Omaha skyline. The 40-by-30-inch painting has a retail value of $11,000. The auction will conclude at 7:15 p.m. Saturday.
Artwork sales benefit mental illness
The Kim Foundation and IABC Omaha (International Association of Business Communicators) are partnering to host “Art for a Cause” on Wednesday.
IABC Omaha will be selling one-of-a-kind artworks by area artists, including Aaron Christensen, William Holland, Jeremie Memming, Laura Mohr, Karen Schnepf, Josh Schwieger, Cindi Coulter and Liz White. All the proceeds go to the Kim Foundation, which serves as a resource and voice for people touched by mental illness.
The event, $35, will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Corkscrew Wine & Cheese, 10924 Prairie Brook Road.
James Siena gives lecture in Lincoln
Visiting artist James Siena will present a free public lecture at 5:30 p.m. April 18 in the Sheldon Museum of Art Abbott Auditorium, 12th and R Streets, Lincoln.
Siena is a New York-based artist who works in lithography, etching, woodcut, engraving, drawing and painting media. His visit is sponsored by the UNL Department of Art and Art History.
