Omaha MapMyFitness users logged nearly 6,000 miles of activity last weekend – enough to rank third on the company's list of the fittest cities in the world.
MapMyFitness is the health technology company behind websites and smart phone applications MapMyRide. Both allow users to record, save and share their workout routes. There are more than 14 million members worldwide, 10 million of whom are in the United States.
Chicago took first in the competition, followed by Indianapolis. Omaha beat out cities in Canada, the U.K., Ireland and New Zealand to round out the top three.
More than 18,000 cities participated by logging workouts between April 5 and 7. The winning cities saw the largest percentage increase of activity over that 3-day period, compared to the previous 30 days. Omaha saw an increase of 66 percent.
Runners logged half of all activity during the competition. Others walked and rode bikes, among other things. Participants covered a combined 3.9 million miles and burned calories equal to more than 8 million bacon strips, according to MapMyFitness.
