TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Indiana State held Creighton to four hits en route to a 6-1 decision Friday at Bob Warn Field that dropped the Bluejays into a three-way tie with Missouri State and Wichita State for first place in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The loss dropped Creighton to 18-7 overall and 5-2 in conference play. Indiana State improved to 15-13 and 5-5 in MVC action.
Creighton trailed 1-0 entering the top of the third inning when sophomore Kevin Lamb and junior Brad McKewon both singled to open the inning. Junior Federico Castagnini reached on a throwing error by Indiana State third baseman Koby Kraemer.
The Bluejays, however, managed just one run as sophomore Jake Peter grounded into a double play, followed by a lineout from junior Mike Gerber to end the inning.
The Sycamores plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning, with two walks and a three-run homer from Robby Ort over the right-field wall.
Indiana State added two insurance runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Jacob Hayes and Jordan Pearson.
Devin Moore (3-3) picked up the win for the Sycamores. The senior right-hander tossed seven innings, striking out six batters and giving up one run on four hits and three walks.
Creighton redshirt freshman Tommy Strunc (4-1) took his first loss of the year, allowing four runs, all earned, on four hits and five walks in five innings of work.
Creighton and Indiana State will continue the three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. CU senior Nick Musec will square off against Sycamore ace Sean Manaea.
