Akin's Natural Foods Market, a Tulsa, Okla.-based organic grocery store, will open its second Nebraska location at 8409 West Center Road in Omaha.
The new 9,000-square-foot store, located in the Canfield Plaza Shopping Center in the space of a former Hollywood Video store, opens at 8 a.m. April 22.
“We've had countless requests to open an Akin's ... in Omaha,” said Eric Hinkefent, the company's president and chief executive.
The 78-year-old chain opened its first Nebraska store in Lincoln in 1989. In addition, Akin's parent company, Amcon Distributing Co., a publicly-traded wholesale distributing firm, is based in Omaha.
Akin's offers natural products, including health and beauty products, foods with no artificial colors or flavors, organic produce and naturally raised meats, and its own brands — Akin's and Paragon — of vitamin and herbal supplements.
Akin's also carries a “comprehensive” selection of foods for people on restricted diets, including gluten-free, wheat-free, low-sodium and a variety of foods for vegans, said Kim Fisher, a company spokeswoman. Books and literature are available, and there's a pet care section.
The Omaha store will employ 30 to 40 part-time and full-time employees, who Fisher said will be trained to help customers navigate offerings.
Akin's Natural Foods Market's regular store hours will be 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Sunday.
The store will hold a grand opening May 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. after a 10:30 a.m. ribbon cutting. Akin's will offer tastings, music and other activities that day.
