Scores of runners are dedicating the miles they log on the pavement to those affected by the Boston Marathon bombing. This weekend provides several opportunities to do so as a community. Check out one of these running events (and be sure to record your miles in our Run to Boston Challenge.)
Runners will meet at Memorial Park on top of the hill at noon to run a 3-mile loop through Elmwood Park. The event is free. To see the event's Facebook page, click here.
The Gambler Half-Marathon and 5K
The Gambler Half-Marathon and 5K is Sunday. The event starts and ends at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs. More than 800 people are registered.
Online registration is closed, but you can sign up in person between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Hilton Garden Inn, adjacent to the Mid-America Center.
The University of Nebraska at Omaha Claussen-Leahy Run
The Claussen 5K Run and Leahy 2K Run are Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Stinson Park in Aksarben Village. The 28th-annual event benefits student-athletes. There will also be an 800-meter kids race and basketball, softball, volleyball, soccer and cheer mini-clinics.
Sign up in person at 7:30 a.m. the day of the event.
5K Mushroom Run and Morel Mile
Indian Cave State Park in southeast Nebraska is hosting the 5K Mushroom Run and Morel Mile on Saturday. The out-and-back route begins outside the park's museum and offers scenic views of the surrounding landscape. It is not a trail run, though there are a couple hills.
The 3.1-mile and 1-mile events kickoff the park's Outdoor Adventure activities through the day, including a mushroom hunt, fish fry, horse rides and archery shooting. Most the events are free, and park entry is $5.
About 70 people are signed up. Register for $20 with cash or check on site beginning at 7 a.m. The race starts at 8 a.m. For more information click here.
Arbor Day 5K and 10K Run
The Arbor Day 5K and 10K race begins and ends at the Arbor Lodge State Historical Park and winds through Arbor Day Farm and parts of Nebraska City, located about 50 miles south of Omaha. The timed race begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Packet pick-up and day-of registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Whispering Bench inside the southeast entrance of the park. For more information click here.
