Huskers' Carnes to transfer at end of semester

LINCOLN — Nebraska quarterback/wide receiver Brion Carnes will transfer at the end of the academic semester, coach Bo Pelini confirmed Saturday.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder from Bradenton, Fla., just finished his redshirt sophomore season at wide receiver after switching from quarterback, where he played in 2010 and 2011. Carnes redshirted in his first year on campus. As Taylor Martinez's backup in 2011, he played in three games. He completed both of his career passes.

After Carnes fell behind walk-on Ron Kellogg III and freshman Tommy Armstrong in 2012 fall camp, he chose to move to wideout. He played against Idaho State but had no catches.

The cousin of former Husker signal-caller Tommie Frazier, Carnes was a four-year starter and four-star recruit out of Manatee High School — Frazier's alma mater. Carnes picked NU over Western Kentucky on signing day in 2010.

WKU's former coach, Willie Taggart, was a Manatee graduate. Taggart has since taken the head coaching job at South Florida, where Carnes had originally committed in 2009 before then-USF coach Jim Leavitt was fired for allegedly grabbing a player by the throat.

Former NU offensive coordinator Shawn Watson — who'd watched Tyler Gabbert commit, then spurn Nebraska in late 2009 — chose to pursue Carnes as a recruit instead of current Northwestern starter Kain Colter, whose close friend, Kenny Bell, is the Huskers' top receiver.

But Carnes also had offers from Georgia and Clemson, among other schools. In a 2011 interview with The World-Herald, current Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said he looked at Carnes while coaching at Florida.

“Fine player,” Meyer said. “He's a guy that gets you out of a bad play. That's one of the things we look for in a quarterback. When things break down, can he get your offense out of a bad play? And he's got the ability to do that.”

Husker turnovers: A slippery slope
Bo Pelini has coached 68 games at Nebraska. When NUís turnover margin is positive or even, the Huskers are 35-2. When they lose the turnover battle, theyíre 13-18. Why hasnít Nebraska joined the nationís elite? More than anything, itís turnovers.
