Huskers can't rally vs. Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A four-run first-inning deficit proved too much to overcome as the No. 18 Nebraska softball team lost 6-5 to Purdue on Sunday, snapping the Huskers' five-game winning streak.

Nebraska stranded 10 runners, including five in the final three innings, leaving the tying runner in scoring position in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

The Huskers jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a Hailey Decker sacrifice fly. But Purdue scored five runs in the bottom of the inning off NU's Tatum Edwards.

Edwards took the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits while walking five and striking out six in six innings.

A two-out rally helped Nebraska cut the lead to 5-4 with a three-run second inning. Edwards and sophomore Jordan Bettiol recorded back-to-back singles before Gabby Banda was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Taylor Edwards was hit by a pitch to bring in a run, and Brooke Thomason lined a single to center field to drive in two more runs.

But the Huskers stranded five runners and were only able to muster a sacrifice fly in the final three innings to drop to 34-10 and 12-4 in Big Ten play.

They'll host Creighton at 6 p.m. Wednesday before a home series with No. 9 Michigan this weekend.
