COUNCIL BLUFFS — Thirty-five Abraham Lincoln High School students and nine adults escaped injury when their charter bus collided almost head-on with a sport utility vehicle Sunday while they were returning from a jazz band trip.
The students were heading home after a contest in Greeley, Colo., and a side trip to Estes Park, Colo.
They were traveling east on U.S. Highway 34 between Loveland, Colo., and Greeley when an SUV crossed the median of the divided highway and crashed into the bus, said band director Mark Mendell.
The passengers had to change buses a couple of times but arrived safely at the high school Sunday night, he said.
