Council Buffs Lewis Central’s boys tennis team put in some extra conditioning in preparation for the city, conference and district championships.
The additional work paid off at the first of those meet as Lewis Central ended Abraham Lincoln’s seven-year run as the city champion. Four singles titles gave Lewis Central enough of a head start to hold off the Lynx by five points despite going 0 for 3 in doubles titles.
“We had a little leeway, but we almost gave it away,” Titans coach Chris Hanafan said. “It’s nice for our boys to win the city title.”
The Titans avenged a 5-4 dual defeat to the Lynx earlier this season.
Ryan Higginbotham rolled past Abraham Lincoln’s Chase Bonar 8-2 in No. 6 singles in what Hanafan said was probably the Titans’ biggest win in claiming their first city title since 2005.
Mason Brinkman took six straight games to turn a 6-2 deficit into an 8-6 win at No. 4 singles, and Blake Huber evened his record against A.L.’s Ryan Koontz at No. 2 singles. Weston Morgan captured the No. 3 singles title.
“I guess it had to happen sometime,” Abraham Lincoln coach Myron Wilder said of the end of his team’s string of titles. “We didn’t want it to happen today.”
A.L.’s Kyle Crowl outlasted L.C.’s Caleb Shudak 8-7 for the No. 1 title in a battle of freshmen. Crowl’s brother Alex won the top flight at last year’s city championship. Aaron Valdivia won No. 5 singles to join Crowl as the Lynx’s champions.
Abraham Lincoln won two doubles titles — Crowl and Koontz at No. 1 and Valdivia and Bonar at No. 3 — but couldn’t catch Lewis Central. Rounding out the champions were Travis Miller and Cody Goeser of St. Albert at No. 2 doubles.
The Titans’ 17-point lead heading into doubles competition held up to end Abraham Lincoln’s reign as city champions.
“A five-point difference in the team title’s probably is as close as it’s ever been,” Hanafan said. “It’s one of the closest city meets I can remember.”
