YORK – If near misses in the stats could somehow be credited in the outcome, the final score of the Schuyler at York girls soccer game may have been in the double digits for both teams.
The Warriors and the Dukes had their chances Friday night, but it was Schuyler (5-4) that will carry a win into the districts which start next week as they slipped past York 1-0 in the regular season finale at the Cornerstone Sports Complex on Friday night.
This was a make-up of the game which was originally scheduled for March 25, but was snowed out.
Shots for both teams were hitting off the crossbar, the side of the goal, several sailed wide and several more went up, up and away over the crossbar on what looked like sure scoring chances.
With the clock showing 11:56 left to play in the first half, Schuyler took advantage of a scoring opportunity and finished the play to take the lead.
A strong crossing pass from Wilma Alvarado to the center of the field set up teammate Becca Folda for the only goal of the game.
The Dukes (6-4) had some trouble with the Warriors' outside speed as they were able to create some problems for the Dukes, but York’s defense, which was led by Marti Hitz, Alyssa Baldridge and Lauren Boyer with three steals each, was solid when it had to be.
In the goal, senior Erica Koehler made great decisions which helped to turn back several scoring chances by the Warriors. Koehler had 15 shots slapped at her and recorded seven saves in the loss.
The Dukes had 19 shots and Schuyler keeper Stephanie Garcia matched her York counterpart shot for shot as she was charted with nine saves.
York head coach Darcy McBride feels the loss will have no bearing on the Dukes' confidence heading into next week.
"This is such a realistic group of girls and they accept things for (how) they are and they don’t point the blame they just go out and get ready for the next game," McBride said. "We know we missed a lot of chances tonight and I told the girls I was proud of them and pleased with the effort. Last night was a tough game in Crete and then to turn around and come out tonight in a short amount of time, I thought they gave it everything they had and they never let up the entire game."
