Nebraska set to host 6-9 forward from Finland

LINCOLN — After missing out on one prospect Thursday, the Nebraska men's basketball staff quickly added an official visit for this weekend from another.

Sai Tummala, a 6-foot-7 forward from Salt Lake (Utah) Community College, picked Arizona State over NU. Tummala, who is from Phoenix, also considered Pitt, BYU and Miami of Ohio.

Nebraska, with one scholarship left for 2013-14, is hosting Mikael Herbert from Finland this weekend. Respected website Eurobasket lists Herbert at 6-9 and 180 pounds.

Herbert, 19, would have four years of eligibility. He averaged 7.2 points and 2.9 rebounds in 24 games for a team in Finland before undergoing shoulder surgery. He shot 52.7 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from 3-point range.

Schools that reportedly have offered Herbert include Kansas State, Utah and Long Beach State.

Herbert's father, Gordon, is a native Canadian who played college ball at Idaho before going to Finland to play professionally for 12 years. Gordon Herbert now coaches overseas. For one year in the late 1990s, he was an assistant with the NBA's Toronto Raptors.

Nebraska coach Tim Miles can't comment on potential recruits. When asked whether all current scholarship players will return next season, he declined to comment.

The Huskers have signed one player this spring: 6-8, 250-pound Leslee Smith from Seward County (Kan.) CC.

Last November, NU signed three players for 2013-14: 6-3 point guard Tai Webster from Auckland, New Zealand; 6-6 forward Nick Fuller from Sun Prairie, Wis.; and 6-5 guard Nate Hawkins from Garland, Texas.

Nebraska announced Thursday that fewer than 300 tickets remain for the coming season. The nearly 15,000 sold at the new Pinnacle Bank Arena has shattered the old mark of 12,000 in 1992-93.

As for student tickets, only 180 of the allotment of 1,650 are left.
