FORT WAYNE, Ind. — IPFW’s Jason Kalber pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits as the Mastodons defeated the University of Nebraska at Omaha 6-2 Friday in the first game of a weekend series.
Brandon Soat’s two-run triple and Kevin Wirth’s sacrifice fly gave Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne (19-21, 7-10 Summit League) a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
Kalber (2-5) would need no more help, as the left-hander allowed one earned run and recorded seven strikeouts.
Mavericks junior Caleb Palensky and sophomore Alex Mortensen each went 2 for 4 for Summit-leading UNO (16-19, 10-3). Senior Cory Buckley extended his team-leading hitting streak to 12 games.
Down 4-0, the Mavs cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth inning. Junior Brett Bass and Mortensen each had RBI singles, but the Mastodons got both runs back in the sixth inning to cap the scoring.
Freshman Tyler Fox (4-2) took the loss, giving up six runs in five innings.
The series resumes with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
