HASTINGS, Neb. — A man charged in the death of his grandson is expected to go on trial in Hastings next week.
Peter Draper, 48, of Naponee is scheduled to appear in Adams County District Court on Monday.
He is charged with one count of child abuse resulting in the 2012 death of Joseph L. Rinehart, 2, and one count of child abuse. The first charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, and the second carries a maximum penalty of 50 years in prison.
Draper's wife, Nancy, 48, and daughter, Laura Rinehart, 25, also are charged in the case.
Nancy Draper's trial is scheduled for June 17 in Phelps County District Court. Rinehart is still in jail and has no coming court dates.
Joseph Rinehart died April 30, 2012, after two trips to Franklin County Hospital. He was treated and released on the first visit but became unresponsive some time after the family returned to Naponee and was taken back to the hospital in Franklin at 8 p.m.
He was not breathing upon arrival and was pronounced dead. An autopsy conducted May 2, 2012, showed the toddler died of head and internal injuries caused by blunt-force trauma. The boy had bruises on his extremities, a skull fracture and an internal abdominal injury caused by blunt-force trauma.
