Omaha South added to a pair of state records Wednesday on its way to a win at the Class A boys soccer tournament.
The No. 1 Packers notched three more goals and registered another shutout in beating No. 10 Lincoln Southeast 3-0 in the first round at Creighton's Morrison Stadium.
South had to work to stretch its records for goals (129) and shutouts (19) in a season while advancing to Friday's semifinals, where it will play No. 7 Kearney.
Southeast used a sagging defense to take away most of the quality looks for the unbeaten Packers.
“When teams do that, we're still controlling the tempo of the game,” South coach Joe Maass said. “We always feel like we're going to get one eventually.”
And the Packers did just that about four minutes in when Emiliano Jacinto got his left foot on a high bounding ball in the box and looped it over the head of Knights keeper Tanner Cockle.
After missing a penalty kick in the opening minute of the second half, South found its range. Forward Charlie Trautman used some fancy footwork to put himself in position for a goal in the 50th minute, and Jacinto added his second three minutes later on a blast from 35 yards out.
“Every one of the guys on that group can shoot and shoot from range,” Southeast coach Jim Ageton said. “They were playing really, really fast. And they take advantage if you pick your head up and take a look.”
Friday's match will mark the fourth straight season that South has reached the semifinals.
While Trautman admitted that there were some nerves in front of Wednesday's large crowd, he said the jitters went away with South's early score.
What about the frustration of firing away against a loaded defense?
“A lot of times teams are better off just playing their game,” Trautman said. “We've seen it enough to know that you just have to possess the ball and look for your chances.”
