If Jason Himberger didn’t own the Capitol Lounge and Supper Club, 1011 Capitol Ave., he guesses he wouldn’t go out all that much. But when he did, he’d want to enjoy it.
He would maybe grab a drink before or after performances at the Holland Performing Arts Center or the Orpheum Theater. When friends or family came for a visit, he would take them somewhere nice.
Himberger, who just turned 41, has noticed that when he visits other cities, he gravitates toward bars or clubs that are both quiet and upscale — and where other patrons are more or less the same age as he is.
He saw a need for such a place in Omaha, and beginning soon, he aims to make Capitol that place one Friday a month.
Himberger calls the new format “Flashback Fridays,” which will be exclusive to patrons 25 and up.
“I don’t want people to feel old,” Himberger said. “I want them with their peers and enjoying the evening.”
Himberger views the monthly events as a destination for groups of friends planning a night on the town or celebrating milestones — an engagement, say, or a new job. Brides-to-be can also call and reserve a table for their bachelorette parties, and he’ll throw in a complimentary bottle of Champagne.
Along with providing a club for bar-goers older than 25, Himberger said he wanted to provide an alternative to the ubiquitous bar-crawl bachelorette party, which he guesses isn’t every bride-to-be’s idea of fun.
Flashback Fridays are one of just several changes in programming at Capitol. The club, which has been open for two years, has also opened its doors to patrons between 18 and 20 on Thursday nights. Capitol’s multi-level layout makes it possible to keep patrons below the legal drinking age separate from those above. The bar has also begun offering an acoustic open-mic night on Wednesday evenings. Thursdays have been huge at Capitol, Himberger said, while Wednesdays have been more low-key. That’s fine with him.
Flashback Fridays will officially begin on June 7, with an Arabian Nights-themed event. The unofficial kickoff is this Friday, when the Chippendales dancers perform at Capitol. The show begins at 9 p.m., with cocktail hour beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $10 to $30.
