NU thumps league leader in opener

MINNEAPOLIS — Christian DeLeon and Dylan Vogt combined on a shutout while Josh Scheffert had three RBIs to lead Nebraska to a series-opening 6-0 win at Minnesota on Friday.

DeLeon, a senior right-hander, allowed three hits in six innings against the Gophers, who entered the weekend atop the Big Ten.

Vogt retired seven straight before the Gophers tried to rally with two singles in the ninth. The senior from Millard South induced a game-ending double play, though, to secure the win.

Eight of Nebraska's nine starters had a hit. the Huskers recorded 11 hits off a Minnesota staff that had entered the week ranked 12th in the country with 7.43 hits allowed per game.

Scheffert led Nebraska (22-25, 13-6 Big Ten), which entered the weekend fourth in the Big Ten standings. The senior from Lincoln Southeast began the scoring with an RBI single in the first, and added a solo home run in the eighth and a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Kash Kalkowski and Tanner Lubach also had big days offensively for Nebraska. Each had two hits, including a double and a triple from Kalkowski.

Minnesota got a solid outing from junior Tom Windle. The left-hander, projected to be drafted within the first three rounds, gave up a pair of runs — one earned — on eight hits in 7 13 innings. He struck out nine.

Nebraska blew the game open in the ninth with four runs on three hits and two sacrifice flies.
