NU moves into Sweet 16 for first time

LINCOLN — The Nebraska women’s tennis team earned its first appearance in the NCAA round of 16 Saturday, topping UNLV 4-1 in a second-round match.

Nebraska, the 15th seed in the tournament, will face No. 2 seed North Carolina at 7 p.m. Friday in Urbana, Ill.

Janine Weinreich clinched the match for the Huskers, downing UNLV’s Janine Erasmus 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.

“It is a huge win for us. It was one of our goals for the whole season to go to the Sweet 16,” Weinreich said. “We’ve had a great season so far, and this was another goal we got accomplished, making history for Nebraska.”

Nebraska coach Scott Jacobson, who received a celebratory dousing from the team following the match, said the Huskers’ depth was key in the win.

“They tested us, that’s for sure,” Jacobson said. “We had some battles down here. UNLV top-to-bottom is really solid so in the end I think our depth really helped. It was exciting to see the team get it done against a program who is playing at their highest level of the season as well.”

Husker senior Mary Weatherholt, the nation’s No. 11-ranked singles player, earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Aleksandra Josifoska at the No. 1 spot, improving to 25-1 on the season.

Freshman Maggy Lehmicke had the other singles win for NU, a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ella Bourchier at the No. 5 spot.
