Summit League-leading UNO swept a doubleheader from Western Illinois on Tuesday, defeating the Leathernecks 7-6 and 7-4 at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
Marcus Ethen, a freshman from Millard West, earned his first collegiate win in the opener, allowong two runs on six hits over five innings.
Senior Derek Landis pitched 113 scoreless innings to earn his seventh save. The Ralston graduate gave up just one hit.
Ryan Keefe, a senior from Bellevue East, extended his hitting streak to 11 games and finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Cole Gruber, Clayton Taylor and Tyler Splichal had two hits apiece. Splichal also was hit twice by pitches.
Down 7-2 after five innings, Western Illinois scored four in the sixth on two-run home runs from Zach Burling and Tanner Glore.
In the seventh, Neil DeCook singled with one out for the Leathernecks, but Landis recorded a strikeout and forced a groundout to end the game.
In game two, Anthony Falcone (3-0) threw 223 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win. The junior from Millard West struck out three and allowed two hits. Matt Tew, a senior from Bellevue East, nabbed his first save of the season, striking out one in a scoreless final inning.
UNO (24-21, 17-5) took the lead for good with two runs in the second inning. After WIU closed the gap to 5-4 in the fifth, the Mavericks scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to close the scoring.
Gruber finished 2 for 3 and drove in two runs, and Taylor was 2 for 4 with an RBI to lead UNO.
This weekend, UNO hosts South Dakota State for a four-game series that features the Summit League’s top teams. The series opens at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ballpark at Boys Town.
