Beginning Wednesday, Goodwill stores in the Greater Omaha area will give merchandise credit instead of cash refunds for returned items.
"The nonprofit's policy change applies to apparel and electrical items," Goodwill Omaha spokeswoman Kris Pachunka said.
Items must be returned within seven days of purchase with the receipt and tags attached. Customers will then be issued credit on a plastic card, which does not expire and can be reloaded for future returns.
The change, said Pachunka, allows customers to make returns at any Goodwill location for any amount. Under the old system, customers were required to return some items to the same store where the merchandise was purchased.
“After reviewing our current policy, we wanted to provide customers a return policy with fewer restrictions,” Pachunka said.
Goodwill Omaha is one of the last regional Goodwill divisions in the nation to change to a merchandise credit system.
“Everyone else switched awhile ago,” Pachunka said. “We're catching up.”
Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly described the policy change because of incorrect information from Goodwill.
