Freshly planted flower beds at Memorial Park suffered extensive damage from Sunday morning's freezing temperatures.
The brown stalks visible in the photo posted with this blog are cannas, a tropical plant that is popular for its green foliage and colorful flowers.
Although the foliage is dead on these plants, the rhyzomes underneath probably are alive and should be able to grow new shoots.
Less likely to bounce back were the tender annuals in the beds that got nipped.
The Omaha Parks Department did not return calls about the damage to the beds.
