Dave Gillespie has been named the new athletic director at Midland University and said he's excited to be part of a program that is poised to do some great things.
Gillespie has been the athletic director at Lincoln Southwest for the past seven years. He also was an assistant football coach and athletic administrator at Nebraska.
Gillespie said there is a lot of energy and excitement surrounding Midland, which has added 11 varsity sports since 2009. The Warriors sponsored 25 varsity and 12 junior varsity programs in 2012-13.
“I think they are truly committed to making every opportunity for student athletes one at a really high level,'' Gillespie said.
Gillespie said he liked Midland's progressive approach to athletics and how the program is a primary driver for enrollment, which has nearly doubled in recent years to 1,097.
Gillespie will start at Midland in a few weeks. He'll first familiarize himself with the people and how things are done to see what fits and might need some tweaking.
“I hope to work within the vision that President (Ben) Sasse has for the university in terms of providing great opportunities for excellence and character development for student athletees,'' Gillespie said.
Of course, a few more wins in the Great Plains Athletic Conference wouldn't hurt, either.
“The GPAC is certainly one of the top NAIA conferences in the country,'' Gillespie said. “We just hope to fit in with that and try to compete in the highest level we can.''
During his time at Southwest, the Silver Hawks qualified for 15 Nebraska state championships. The program has won the Heartland Athletic Conference all-sports trophy four consecutive years.
“I feel best about the relationships I created there. Those are the things I'll look back on with the most satisfaction,'' Gillespie said. “We certainly had our share of success, which was great. We provided some great support for kids to succeed at a high level and learn a lot of good life skills.''
