COUNCIL BLUFFS — St. Albert came out swinging.
After slow offensive starts in their first three games of the season, the Falcons did all the damage they needed against rival Lewis Central in the first inning of their meeting Friday.
St. Albert plated three runs on four hits against Titan starter Josh Jones in the opening frame, then made that lead stand up in its 7-1 victory.
Alex Rindone opened with a single to left. Jake Petry followed with the first of five sacrifices by the Falcons. An RBI single by Jake Lewis then broke St. Albert out of its early-season funk.
“We went to the cage earlier today because we knew we weren't being aggressive enough,” Lewis said. “And our contact was off. I think we had 10 or 12 strikeouts yesterday. It's been a long week. We made a conscious effort to come out and hit early.”
Nick Gantt added an RBI single and Logan Lieber drove in a run with a sacrifice fly as the Falcons handed winning pitcher Jon Meyerring a 3-0 lead.
The lefty allowed one run on three hits through five innings before giving way to Gantt, who threw two scoreless innings and put the game away with a two-run home run in the seventh.
It was the most complete effort to date for St. Albert this season. The Falcons went 2-2 this week.
“We had been striking out way too much. It's almost like we're waiting for people to walk us,” Falcon coach Jeremy Petry said. “We've got too much power and speed to sit around and wait. I was pleased. We were not only aggressive, we were smart.”
The Falcons added an insurance run in the sixth to extend their lead to 4-1. Lewis then doubled to lead off the seventh. Jimmy Hawk singled, and Travis Miller followed with a sac fly. Gantt then launched a shot to left-center that capped St. Albert's big night.
The Titans (2-2) loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but left them that way. L.C. stranded 11 runners, seven of whom were in scoring position. Luke Sutherland's RBI single in the second, after a leadoff double by Jones, accounted for the Titans' only run.
In contrast to St. Albert, L.C. had its worst night of opening week, coach Lee Toole said.
“We started off really flat,” he said. “It was a really weird feeling to start the game. We just didn't have the fire tonight. I'm not taking anything away from St. Albert, but we didn't have the energy tonight.”
