WATERLOO, Iowa — Fourth-seeded Red Oak senior Pete Walker advanced to Saturday’s Class 1-A state tennis singles semifinals with wins over Decorah’s Ryan Hageman (6-0, 6-0) and Spirit Lake’s Brandon Stoll (6-3, 6-2).
Red Oak’s Jordan Nelson lost 6-1, 6-1 to Boone’s Chad Moklestad in the first round, then beat Cherokee’s Brett Walker 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4) in his first consolation match.
In 1-A doubles action, Atlantic’s Tyler Fischer and Noah Welter beat Le Mars’ Matt Elletson and Evan Richards 7-5, 6-1, but then lost to Marion’s Brandon Hornback and Michael Anderson 6-1, 6-2. The Atlantic duo then lost to Norwalk’s Austin LaVelle and Grant Wright 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (6).
The other Atlantic team of Jake Arneson and Adam Wieser lost to Decorah’s Lucas Hunter and Gable Lonning 6-0, 6-4, then lost to Pella’s Tom Palmer and Aaron Van Maanen 6-4, 6-2.
Creston’s doubles team of Colby Taylor and Bryce McIlravy lost to Fort Dodge St. Edmond’s Jimmy Averill and Konrad Laufersweiler 6-1, 7-6 (4), and then lost to Waterloo Columbus’ Michael Grams and Connor Barnard 6-1, 6-3.
In 2-A at Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs Lewis Central freshman Caleb Shudak dropped a pair of singles matches Friday and was eliminated.
Shudak lost in the first round 6-0, 5-1 to Cedar Falls senior Rex Ju. In his first consolation match, Shudak lost 6-2, 6-1 to Linn-Mar sophomore Tim Paulson.
