A 26-year-old Omaha man died following an early morning shooting, the first violent crime on the landmark Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge since it opened in 2008.
Sharmari K. Richards died several hours after the 1:15 a.m. shooting that sent two others to the hospital. Kevin Jenkins, 29, and Jeremy Fejeran, 19, are expected to survive.
One person was in custody; others were being sought by police for questioning.
An altercation preceded the shootings, and shots and a woman's screams were reported to police several minutes before officers found the victims.
One of the shooting victims reportedly was shot in the stomach, another in the foot.
Detectives from both cities spent most of the morning at the scene. Crime-scene tape on both sides of the river kept runners and cyclists from using the bridge.
The exact location of the shooting was not clear.
The bridge is open 24 hours a day, unless weather or repairs force it to close. In the Bluffs, the area around the bridge doesn't close at night, said Council Bluffs Police Capt. Scott Milner.
But the plaza on the Omaha side of the bridge closes at 11 p.m. daily, as do all city parks.
In order to get to the pedestrian bridge from Omaha, visitors have to walk through at least part of the plaza, which would be a curfew violation late at night. The rules, however, aren't enforced on a regular basis, said Brook Bench, acting director of the Omaha Parks and Recreation Department.
Lt. Darci Tierney, an Omaha police spokeswoman, said officers routinely patrol the area around the bridge. She encouraged citizens to notify police if they see any suspicious activity or large crowd gatherings on the bridge.
The bridge has call boxes that will dial 911 directly if anyone needs help, Tierney added.
Council Bluffs parks close at 10 p.m. Milner said law enforcement and parks officials are looking at whether to implement a curfew now that the city's new Tom Hanafan River's Edge Park opened last week on the Bluffs side of the bridge.
