Race Training Schedules

If you can run five miles today, you can run a marathon in three months.

Barry Siff was introduced to that philosophy 32 years ago, when he ran his first marathon. At the time, he had never run more than three miles at a time. Now, Siff and HITS Inc. (who organize the Omaha Marathon) are bringing that mentality to the September 21-22 event.

The Omaha Marathon weekend is comprised of full and half marathons, a 10K, 5K and one mile races.

LiveWellNebraska has teamed up with HITS and Brett Stewart, a running/triathlon coach and author of “7 Weeks to a 10K.” Stewart has customized the training schedules below.

Click on the distance you'd like to run to find details. We'll also include nutrition advice, stretching ideas and other tips and tools along the way.

Stewart has designed these training schedules to be progressive programs of interval training. You'll obviously be running, but the goal is to increase your weekly mileage while getting in as many shorter runs as possible at the desired intensity. Think quality over quantity. You'll get stronger and fitter faster. The best part? You'll be running less and getting more out of it.
