The secret is out: meteorologist Jim Flowers has officially joined KMTV-Channel 3.
"It might have been the worst-kept secret in Omaha," said Chris Sehring, general manager of the Journal Broadcast Group, which operates Omaha's CBS television affiliate and five local radio stations.
Flowers, a meteorologist in the Omaha area since 1982, has now worked at KETV, WOWT and KMTV. He will make his first on-air appearance Monday. Sehring declined to discuss details of the hiring agreement but did say it's a "long contract."
Sehring said Flowers' role will be "TV-first," with appearances on the network's 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts, but also include radio.
After almost 21 years at the station, WOWT-Channel 6 did not renew Flowers' contract at the end of 2012. Prior to his stint at WOWT, Flowers worked for KETV-Channel 7 for 10 years.
KMTV has teased Flowers' hiring for months on its TV and radio stations. Once the contractual terms of Flowers' arrangement with WOWT were fulfilled on June 1 -- a standard grace period written into some TV contracts to prevent public faces from quickly swapping stations, Sehring said -- KMTV made the hire official.
"Our sense is, in the long run, we're confident we're going to get a big bump from Jim," Sehring said.
