If you’re going to coach an all-star team of just-graduated high school players in Nebraska, it usually doesn’t hurt to have four former Omaha Central Eagles on your team.
Millard West assistant coach Chad Mustard had just that luxury as his North squad overpowered the South all-stars 89-69 at the Lyle Buell Cage Classic at Creighton Prep.
Former Eagles KJ Scott, Tra-Deon Hollins, Deandre Hollins-Johnson and Nick Billingsley came off Central’s fourth straight Class A championship to combine for 44 points Saturday.
But it was former Omaha Skutt star Brian Schwetschenau who walked away with the MVP hardware.
Schwetschenau and Hollins each scored 16 points to lead the North while Billingsley scored 13 and Scott added 12.
Mustard said he had a plan on how to use the four Central stars to break open a game that was tied 37-37 at the half.
“We figured out if we spread them out instead of playing all four at once, it would work better,” Mustard said. “So we did that in the second half.”
More important than winning, though, Mustard said, it was a fun event.
“We have some talented basketball players here in the metro,” Mustard said.
“It was a good event. These guys get to come out and play one last time in their high school uniform before moving on to school or work or whatever they’re going to do next.”
Aireon Porter of Omaha North led the South with 13 points.
Omaha South’s Lyle Hexom and Millard North’s Zane Stull each added 10 for the South.
Schwetschenau, who plans to attend St. John’s (Minn.), next year and play baseball and basketball, said it took him some time to find his stride after a long layoff from the high school season.
“I had to get my legs under me that first half,” he said.
The Metro Basketball Coaches Association honored the boys’ players and coaches of the year.
Players of the year are Akoy Agau of Omaha Central and Brett Dougherty of Papillion-La Vista for Class A boys, and Jake Goltl of Ralston for Classes B, C and D.
Coaches of the year were Eric Behrens of Central for Class A boys and Kevin Scheef of Wahoo for Classes B, C and D.
