With the lack of power in this year’s College World Series, some fans may still be craving some blasts out of TD Ameritrade Park. Three Atlantic Coast Conference stars will be among those attempting to put on a show as the first selections for next week’s College Home Run Derby.
Virginia’s Kenny Towns was announced as the first participant on the derby’s official Twitter account. Towns hit seven home runs with the Cavaliers this year, but it was the timeliness of the swats that set him apart. His first two came in the first game of the season against East Carolina University — both were grand slams. In the ACC championship against Florida State, he cleared the left-field wall for a walk-off win in the 12th inning.
Clemson’s Garrett Boulware was the second selection. The sophomore catcher batted .214 with no home runs in limited playing time in 2012, but he led the Tigers in home runs (eight) and RBIs (45) this season.
DJ Stewart will be the first Florida State player to compete in the derby. The freshman led his team in batting average (.364), doubles (25), slugging percentage (.560) and stolen bases (eight), to go along with his five home runs.
The three were the first of eight to be announced for the derby. The announcements will continue on the derby’s official Twitter account, @CollegeHRDerby. All eight will be announced by July 1. The derby will take place July 3 at TD Ameritrade Park.
