CHADRON — Dillon DeMott and Caleb Geary held the Chadron Nationals to just three hits in the Gering Platte Valley Companies senior legion baseball team’s doubleheader sweep on Wednesday night in Chadron.
Gering captured a 5-1 win in game one before igniting for a 12-0 win in four innings in game two.
The wins improved Gering’s record to 9-16 on the season.
“The pitchers threw strikes and the defense made plays,” Gering coach Rick Kinnaman said. “That kept our pitch count down, so they were effective deep into the game. That really, really helped. And then our batters were patient at the plate and we always had runners on – I think every inning of both games.”
DeMott powered Gering in the first game after surrendering just one run on one hit in the complete game.
Gering jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first when Walker Britsch doubled to drive in Taylor Winkler, giving Gering the 1-0 lead.
The damage, though, came in the bottom of the second when Gering’s first two hitters reached on walks in front of an RBI single by Bret Orozco to extend the Gering lead to 2-0. Up 3-0 after Orozco scored on an error, Britsch came through again in the bottom of the frame with a two-run single to score Gage Winkler and Justin Brester to give PVC the lead for good in the contest.
Britsch shined on offense for PVC in game one, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs, while Orozco was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
PVC kept the momentum going in game two, erupting for five runs in the first inning en route to the 12-0 win behind the arm of Geary, who gave up no runs on two hits with four strikeouts to take his pitching record to 3-1 on the season.
Gering plated runs in each of the final three innings, scoring two in the second, three in the third, and two in the fourth while defensively holding Chadron to just four base runners in the game. Chadron received hits from Braxtyn Hespe (1-for-2) and Falcon Albers (1-for-2). Nate Toof and Gavin Fredrick both reached on walks.
Kinnaman lauded his team’s ability to bounce back after suffering a tough 14-5 loss to Alliance on Tuesday night in Gering.
“I think the kids finally loosened up and relaxed a little bit and enjoyed it,” he said. “They decided that it couldn’t get any worse, so they decided to have fun with it. I totally believe in them and they totally believe in what we’re doing.”
Offensively for Gering, Austin Ferguson had just one hit in the game, but his 1-for-3 performance drove in two runs and manufactured two more runs scored. Nate Ferreyra also had a solid night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. In addition, Logan Conn was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, while Brent Barge was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Gering will return to action this weekend when it travels to Rapid City, S.D. to play in Post 320’s Black Hills Classic. PVC will take on Sheridan at 12:30 p.m. on Friday before playing Miles City, Mont. at 3 p.m. on Saturday and Rapid City Post 320 Stars at 8 p.m. on Saturday night.
