COLUMBUS, Neb. — Omaha accountant Brian Csipkes, at 41, is the only quarterfinalist in the Nebraska men’s match-play golf tournament who wasn’t sitting in a high school or college classroom a month ago.
Two of the eight, Carson Schaake and Ben Maschka of Omaha, played on Creighton Prep’s record-setting Class A championship team. Maschka is the youngest in the quarterfinals.
Qualifying leader Lance Lawson of Norfolk will be a senior at the University of Nebraska Kearney. Andy Sajevic of Fremont will be a senior at North Carolina.
Jordan Reinertson of Gibbon (Nebraska) and Will Pieper of Omaha (Charleston Southern) recently completed their athletic eligibility. Dylan Heng of Nebraska City is a senior at NU who is not playing collegiately.
Lawson (No. 2), Schaake (No. 6) and Sajevic (No. 9) are the highest seeds left in the tournament after Wednesday’s second and third rounds.
Quarterfinals and semifinals are Thursday, with the final scheduled for 36 holes Friday at Elks Country Club.
In the third round, three matches were won 1 up — Csipkes over Renen Sahr of Gordon, Pieper over Paul Mohr of Scottsbluff and Schaake over Mike Siwa of Omaha.
Heng and Reinertson also went to the 18th hole for 2-up wins. Heng beat Oklahoma recruit Rylee Reinertson, Jordan’s younger brother. Richard Schneider of Omaha lost to Jordan Reinertson.
