DES MOINES — The LSE Elite Girls Academy U-19 Bravo squad edged Kolping Kicks Schmitt of Missouri 4-3 Wednesday to win a Region II soccer title and advance to nationals.
The group of collegians from Nebraska won a difficult game, coach Marcus Kelcher said.
“Our depth was the deciding factor,'' he said. “We had one or two more talented kids than they did.''
Caroline Flynn and Alyssa Flannery, who both play at Nebraska, scored for Bravo as did Alex Massey, who transferred after last season from Nebraska to Auburn; and Ava Ambrose, a former Omaha Marian star now at Miami. Flannery, Emily Nulty (Marian/Northern Illinois) and Paige Nielsen (Lincoln Southeast/North Carolina) each scored three goals for Bravo in the tournament.
The team also won a regional title in 2008 when it first formed, a first for a girls team from Nebraska.
Nationals will be July 22 to 28 in Overland Park, Kan.
The NFC 93/94 Blue didn't fare as well in the U-19 boys final, falling to Chicago Fire Academy 2-0. The teams had met in pool play, with NFC winning 1-0.
The Phoenix Juventus also lost their under-14 boys final 4-0 to the Michigan Wolves 99. The Wolves scored all their goals in the first half.
Both Nebraska teams had gone 2-0-1 in pool play to advance.
